Sustainet – a cooperative project to combat world hunger through sustainable agriculture
Current estimates put the number of starving people at 850 million. Experiences from around the world confirm that
sustainable agriculture can make a significant contribution to fighting starvation worldwide. For peasants in Southern
countries, in particular, it offers a realistic way to increase their income. Despite its major potential, in many cases
even successful sustainable agriculture models have not been able to gain a strong foothold.
The
German Council for Sustainable Development has put the problem on its agenda and as part of the
Programme of Action 2015 of the Federal Government has launched the cooperative project Sustainet -
Sustainable Agriculture Information Network. Funded by the
German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the
German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) the aid organisations
Brot für die Welt (Bread for the World),
Deutsche Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action),
Misereor as well as the
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH have joined forces with other partners to analyse
the problem of often insufficient dissemination of promising approaches, and then to take action to find solutions.
